Impact of shading on evapotranspiration and water stress of urban trees

Evapotranspiration of urban street trees is essential in mitigating heat islands due to its cooling effect. However, current shifts rainfall and temperature regimes towards drier hotter periods Central Europe have caused substantial water stress for trees. Quantifying subsequently managing these changing dynamics as well estimating evapotranspiration availability necessary but at the same time extremely challenging environments. Both are influenced by soil sealing complex shading patterns surrounding canyon, which vary on a small spatial scale function canyon layout orientation. In present study, diurnal six typical types were derived considering large set orientations, widths tree positions within canyon. A model was integrated into hydrological assess impact those radiation rates calculated using Penman–Monteith approach resulting moisture conditions several vegetation seasons water-supply scenarios. The modelling results showed that significantly simulated hourly, daily seasonal potential actual availability. Shaded substantially reduced, period, regardless initial supply, able provide longer-lasting during dry higher later summer season.
